In service of these communities KACCAD is committed to supporting water and sanitation projects. As an organization strongly rooted in the community it serves, KACCAD has worked with the local government in Wakiso District and community members to identify key health and wellbeing issues in the district. Top among these is water and sanitation. Though Wakiso faces many sever challenges to health and wellbeing, water stands at the top because as a necessity to life each person in the community is affected by its quality and availability.
In Wakiso District it is estimated that almost 50% of the population does not have access to safe drinking water. In Ssumbwe Parish of Wakiso there are a total of 12 wells for over 10,150 people. An average of 845 people use each well. Of these 12 wells only three are in good functioning condition (2002 census). The others nine “wells” in mall repair could be more accurately called stagnant pools. Contaminants such as cholera, schistosomiasis, amebic dysentery, other water borne diseases and waste products pollute these wells. These realities make it clear that well development is of fundamental importance in Ssumbwe and the district.
