In 2004 Kanchi, and Irish non-profit, developed an innovative solution to engage business leadership and change the reality of employment for persons with disabilities, the Ability Awards. The Ability Awards, with title sponsor O2, included the development of a unique assessment tool and intensive communications campaign which aimed to bring about systemic change in business thinking. Kanchi wanted to change business mindsets towards a value proposition for businesses. The Ability Awards is a vehicle to engage businesses in the disability business case.

The Ability Awards brings committed companies through an intensive seven stage learning process. Businesses of all types are welcome and judged by a preliminary and final judging panel on six categories: Leadership, Customer Service, Retention and Well Being, Recruitment and Selection, Environmental Accessibility and Learning, Development and Progression.

My name is Jessica and I am a volunteer at Kanchi. I am also visually impaired and an American. I have witnessed firsthand the positive effects of the Ability Awards and strongly believe in their ability to drive social change for persons with disabilities. They combine the power of business, media and government to encourage people to think differently about disability. I am proud to be part of the international franchise and look forward to possibly one day seeing these Awards reach my home country.
