We are running an adult education programme in Limpopo. We have about 2000 learners spread over the five districts of Limpopo - all extremely rural sites. All of our learners are unemployed and many of them are women supporting children and grandchildren. These people do not receive any payment for coming to class and yet have been unbelievably committed to the process of learning. Many of our learners were completely illiterate, not even able to write their names.
The reasons cited for wanting to learn have been things like: Wanting to access a grant / get an ID book / get a birth certificate without having to pay someone to help. Wanting to read from the Bible / Hymn book during church services. Wanting to participate in children´s education. Wanting to use ATMs (Autobanks) independently - many illiterate people are "conned" by own family members. Wanting to read medicine instructions to take the medication correctly.
As the festive season approaches, we are increasingly aware of the day to day struggles that our learners face. Just feeding themselves and their families on a daily basis is a challenge - things like paraffin, candles, airtime, soap, school uniforms, school stationary and clothing are all secondary problems. For now we would like donations towards a Christmas fund for our learners. We aim to, at the very least, give each learner a food voucher that can be redeemed at a Metro Cash and Carry.
