I suffered severely from diarrhoea when I travelled to the village of Anwomaso in the Ashanti region of Ghana for voluntary work. I nearly lost my life from this disease but was fortunate to have received urgent medical attention in Kumasi. It was discovered to have been because by the untreated (contaminated water) that entered my body.

Many children die everyday from these water borne disease in sub Saharan Africa due to unclean water in take.

Doctors supporting me on this project talks to me about the numerous water borne disease in these villages that are reported to facility which are unfortunately killing many of the inhabitants.

Apart from the common water borne diseases like Diarrhoea and Guinea Worm attacking and killing them , the following disease has also hit the

• Arsenicosis – Arsenic in drinking water can cause hard wounds on the skin.
• Schistosomiasis – a disease caused by worms that go into people’s skin when they swim, bathe or wash in contaminated water. The infection eventually damages the liver, intestines, lungs and bladder.
• Trachoma – an eye infection spread through poor hygiene caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. It can cause blindness.
• Typhoid – from contaminated food or water which give headaches, nausea and takes away appetite.

As a victim, I see the urgency in embarking on this project to raise funds to purchase and distribute Life Straws which is effective in purifying water before it enters the body.
With just 7 Euros, you can also save a life. I have personally funded and distributed over 100 life straws to rural folks and school children, there is much need for this and I envisage every school child to have a life straw for use in areas with predominant water borne disease all across west Africa. I am however limiting myself to the village of Anwomaso and it surroundings for now due to the rate of death now.

Donate 7 euros or more now to save a child and own a piece of this outreach!

Thank you for your answer. I still have some questions. I would like to get to know a bit more about the village Anwomaso and the district of Ejisu-Juaben as well. How many people live in the district and how many households enjoy adequate potable water, like pipe-borne drinking water, tanker services, boreholes or wells? Has Anwomaso got any source of drinking water? What is the main source of getting safe water? How many children live in Anwomaso and the other villages you have mentioned? Do I understand you right that the 100 distributed life straws cover already all children in Anwomaso or just children of a certain age group? What will be the coverage by distributing 1000 life straws to school children in Anwomaso and the villages Domeabra, Bebere, Apeadu, Promase, Emena and Kokoben? Thanks.

Hi ! The district of Ejisu-Juaben has a population of over 145,000 inhabitants. The size of the district stands at 637.2 sq.km. There are eighty four settlements in the district,sixty-five of them have a population each above four-hundred (400). 38 % of the population living in bigger towns have access to pipe borne water but according to document i have from the district, the flow is inconsistent. The other percentage of the population get their water from well, river and boreholes. Anwomaso has a borehole and a river. The borehole in itself was not functioning at the time of my stay there and the community had to rely on the services of water tankers. A water is safe when it has undergone treatment process. Research from the district indicate that, almost 85% of the entire population in the district do not drink treated water. I do not have readily available statistics from Anwomaso with regards to number of children. The 100 life straws i distributed was what i could afford to do and it could not cover all the children even in one single school. There are a lot more children in Anwomaso who shall need the life straw and the other villages. 1000 life straws will still not be enough but it is my projection to be able to cover some part of the children population while i seek other alternative funding to support my project for the communities.I prefer to set targets and be able to meet them while i continue with another set of targets.Within sometime, i could be able to cover the entire children population in the villages where i find vulnerable. Thanks for your involvement!

Hello! Could you be so kind as to tell to which district in the Ashanti region Anwomaso village belongs? I would like to learn more about the village and your working framework to distribute 1000 life straws to the population.

Hi Knott, Anwomaso is in the Ejisu-Juaben District. The distribution of the life straws is done by me personally to the children. I did the same with the 100 life straws i personally bought. I go to the schools and i present to each child in a specific classrooms. With the help of the teachers and nurse volunteer, we are able teach the children the right way of using and maintaining the life straws. The target now is to enable all school children in Anwomaso and all villages around it including Domeabra,Bebere,Apeadu,Promase, Emena, Kokoben to benefit. The target is on the children because they are the easily vunerable. Thank you

Hi there. Have you considered the "life straw family" option? http://www.vestergaard-frandsen.com/lifestraw-f-intro.htm
    • by H. Siaw, asked on 18 August 2008 at 05:39 PM
Hi Bodo, i have considered that option but i am desirous to tackle it from this point ''life straw personal'' because of it mobility to be use by the children anytime and at any place. if each child has a life straw with him/her it shall serve very good for them. In the future, i can raise money to buy ''life straw family'' for families. i very much appreciates your input. Much regards!
