Kyetume Bajja Basaaga (Humble Beginning) Women's Group created their constitution in March of 2008. These women are either infected with HIV & AIDS or are young mothers (current membership is 15 women). This group provides them the opportunity to get together and laugh and learn new skills.
Currently we are training the women to make the paper beads, which they will be able to sell in Kyetume and in Mukono. In the future we hope to expand the training to include soap making, tie and die, and other bead work (making money bags and bracelets).
Donations will go towards materials and trainings for the women.
This group was organized by Sarah Ocwieja (Peace Corps volunteer) and David Kiyimba (focal person for reproductive health), with help from Esther Aisu (water and sanitation focal person).
The main challenges to date are getting everyone organized and moving forward with limited funding.

Completed (3):

  • Papper Cutter

    80 Euro. • Published 05 August 2008
This would enable the women to quickly cut the posters and other paper into the needed sizes to make the beads, decreasing the time needed to prepare the materials, increasing the production rate.
  • Varnish

    19 Euro. • Published 01 August 2008
The clear varnish is used to coat the paper beads to make them shiny and resistant to water and wear. The cost is something that is unreachable for the women until they start making money.
  • Plastic Beads and String

    40 Euro. • Published 01 August 2008
This is used to supply the inital supply of beads and string to the women to start making jewelry, who will purchase their own after they begin to sell their products.
